Triton “The Featherbed Racer”

This bike was especially built for one of our more mature customers and good friend Simon. It was his lifelong dream, ever since the 60’s when he was blasting down the country lanes on many of his British bikes or spending a week at the Isle of Man in a tent with his mates. We had already built a Triumph T100 cafe racer for him, but he was always banging on about the “good ol days” and this Triton of his.
So the story began in 2015 when his dream slowly started to materialize. Den picked up a Dominator Wide Line Featherbed project in Croydon and along with the frame and swinging arm, he also managed to persuade the seller to let go a set of full width Norton hubs, Borrani rims and a short road-holder forks. Next was the Triumph engine. Due to the tight budget we had to settle for a T100 pre-unit engine and a slick shift box off an ex drag bike.
There was no time critical plan in place, but we did have the full trust of the customer to create a classic TT looking racer and at the same time, fabricate a unique one-off hand-built machine. This bike was going to be created from raw polished aluminum components starting with the custom engine and gearbox mounting plates to the hand built short circuit petrol tank. We started by stripping and modifing the frame and then fabricating a custom electric box to hide under the seat. We also added… Tarozzi rear sets, Honda CB750 kickstart conversion, hand built twin carb inlet manifold, hand built exhaust system, one off wiring loom with a modern touch, electronic ignition and modern rectifier regulator conversion…
Once we got the bike to the dry build stage, we stripped it all back to its bare bones and fully rebuild every single component.
The classic Dunlop TT tyres and the front twin leading brake added a nice touch to the vintage racer look. There were a few final touches like the classic looking leather seat and the leather tank strap (which Den had to sacrifice one of his favorite Levi’s belts for!) to finish off the project nicely.
In the end this bike is stunning!. She oozes style and the “old school” TT racer style. Simon couldn’t be happier and loves to roll her out on a crisp morning to hear her purr…
